SUMMARY:Fitness Lovers Celebrate the Skye Life at Fit Fest
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 19\, more than 1500 fitness-lovers from around Las Vegas made their way to Skye Canyon Park for the inaugural Fit Fest\, a celebration of health and fitness. A sun filled day with a light breeze made for a perfect day to run\, practice yoga\, play mini-golf\, scale the rock-climbing wall and shop locally produced goods at the artisan market. \nThe second annual Skye Canyon 8K Trail Mix & 5K Road Race kicked the day off at 8 a.m. when nearly 200 runners took their mark. The 5K course took runners through Skye Canyon’s Phase 1 neighborhoods while runners in the 8K Trail Mix first hit the streets and then took to the dirt trails in the community. \nThe top three finishers in each division received a commemorative plaque and include: \nFirst Place                              5K                                                    8K\nFemale                                   Joann Pavlovcak  20:36                  Lee Ann Burns  40:09\nMale                                       Bryan Haas  22:11                             Michael Slawski  34:42 \nSecond Place \nFemale                                   Emily Mangino  21:34                     Angelina Martinez  41:59\nMale                                       Terrence Lynch  26:39                    Robert Pratus  34:00 \nThird Place\nFemale                                   Christy Van Nest  23:58                 Jennifer Decker  42:14\nMale                                       Bryan White  27:27                         Lee Novak  38:24 \nBenefiting the Outside Las Vegas Foundation\, funds will support programs like park cleanups\, health education\, and teaching youth to appreciate the Southern Nevada’s great outdoors. \nAt 10 a.m. more than 300 yogis got their “om” on when local yoga guru and instructor Dray Gardner taught a Silent Savasana class on the south side of Skye Canyon Park. Silent Savasana is a blend of traditional hatha yoga with music where attendees wear headphones that block out outside distractions. The yogi only hears the instructor’s voice and the music. The 90-minute class included yogis of all levels and kids as young as 6 years old. \nInside Skye Fitness\, Troy\, Heidi and Dana\, the team at Skye Fitness\, taught 30-minute fitness classes such as Skye Cycle\, Danceworkz\, Bootcamp Blast\, and Core Training that make residents sweat. \nFit families enjoyed the day as kids lined up for a chance to climb the rock-climbing wall\, navigate obstacle courses\, play mini golf and rugby. \nMix 94.1 Mercedes in the Morning co-host JC Fernandez kept everyone in the spirit with a blend of his upbeat tunes. Slidin Thru and 50 Shades of Green food trucks served up scrumptiously healthy goodies and an artisanal farmers market featuring local vendors was set up for those who wanted to purchase healthy items to take home. Fit Fest was the perfect way to bid winter good-bye and bring on spring.

SUMMARY:Skye and Stars June 2017
DESCRIPTION:https://skyecanyon.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/skye-and-stars-event-recap.mp4 \nVideo courtesy of JSR Creative \nOn Saturday\, June 3\, more than 1500 people enjoyed a sunset picnic\, music\, views of the Spring Mountains and the second annual Skye & Stars event at Skye Canyon Park. After dark\, volunteers from the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS) helped stargazers explore the Milky Way. LVAS provided 15 of high-tech (and in some cases gigantic) telescopes\, including two Mallincams\, powerful high-tech astronomy video cameras\, and a futuristic laser that points directly at objects in the night sky. The lights at Skye Canyon Park were covered with a red tint to make viewing celestial objects easier and to add to the ambiance of the evening. \nEarly in the night\, Jupiter was the galaxy’s showstopper followed by Saturn where guests had a clear view of its rings. Attendees also had views of the moon’s craters and mountain ridges\, and Mars. More than 200 guests took part in a special laser tour of the Milky Way\, while some got a lesson on how to determine north\, south\, east and west via the stars. \nLVAS is a local non-profit organization made up of amateur astronomers. The group was formed to promote astronomy\, educate the public\, and provide educational outreach. For more information on their organization visit www.lvastronomy.com.

SUMMARY:Fit Lives Here: Meet Your Neighbor\, Monica Harter
DESCRIPTION:Monica Harter was raised in Iowa where wide open yards made it easy to become friendly with neighbors. She feared things would be different in Las Vegas. However\, choosing to live in Skye Canyon proved to be just like home. Morning aqua fit classes\, resident trips or dining out with neighbors\, Harter\, is an adventure junkie taking advantage of the Skye Canyon Life. \nSC: Tell us a little bit about you and your family? \nMonica: My husband Lynn and I grew up together in Iowa. Lynn is a lineman and works on power lines. I used to work in HR but have recently “retired” to stay at home and take care of our new puppy Scout. Lynn and I both enjoy spending time outdoors\, staying active\, and socializing with our neighbors. \nSC: Why did you choose Skye Canyon? \nMonica: For two years\, Lynn and I traveled around the country residing in Florida\, Georgia\, Texas\, New Mexico\, and Arizona before deciding on Las Vegas our final destination\, and choosing Skye Canyon as the community in which we wanted to live and build a life. We fell in love with the area and knew Skye Canyon was for us when we realized it was exactly 18 miles from many of the trails in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and 18 miles from The Strip. \nSC: Wow\, you’ve lived in quite a few places. Tell us a little more about your travels. \nMonica: It’s a funny story. Lynn has a job where he can work anywhere. We decided we wanted to explore different areas of the country\, so for a while\, we rented houses and condos\, but then thought it would be easier to purchase an RV and live in there while we explored. We stayed in RV parks but the RV was only 400 square feet\, and after a year\, we needed more space. And\, we wanted a dog. We looked at Skye Canyon when it was solely blueprinted and decided from the plans this is where we wanted to settle. \nSC: Now that you’ve moved into Skye Canyon\, is the community what you thought it was going to be? \nMonica: It is so much more. We were informed the community was going to offer resident activities\, but we assumed that activities would consist of a once a month gathering. But instead\, Skye Canyon offers fun events such as kayaking on the Colorado River\, snowshoeing the Bristlecone Trail in Lee Canyon\, stargazing with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society\, yoga at Mt. Charleston and they recently offered a ‘dive-in’ movie night out by the pool. But even more than that\, there is a sense of community. We have become friends with our neighbors and spend time with them outside of Skye Canyon events. We even enjoy spending time with the Skye Canyon staff. Lynn and I recently returned from a trip and one of the first things we wanted to do was grab a cup of coffee at Skye Bistro and catch up with the Skye Center staff. We not only participate in these cool resident events but we also got involved with Skye Serves\, which does philanthropic work in the community \nSC: Which charitable organization are you involved with? \nMonica: Skye Canyon has a program called Skye Serves that allows residents to get involved with various non-profits. I enjoy the work we do with the Goodie Two Shoes Organization. There are about 12-15 Skye Canyon residents that go to schools and fit underprivileged kids with new shoes. It was eye-opening for me to learn that so many school age kids don’t know the feel of wearing the correct size shoe. They have always owned hand me downs that are either too big or too small for their feet. The smile on their faces when they receive their new fitted shoes melts my heart. \nSC: We’ve seen that adorable puppy in resident photos. Tell us about that little guy. \nMonica: Our puppy Scout is celebrating his first birthday this month. We don’t know the exact date of his birthday because he was a rescue from the Animal Foundation. I take him hiking\, and since he only weighs 8 pounds\, I can just carry him if he gets tired. \nSC: Which home community did you choose? \nMonica: We chose Teton Cliffs by Woodside Homes. The two-story Calico model was exactly what we had in mind. \nSC: What recent news has you excited about living in Sky Canyon? \nMonica: We have seen so much growth in Skye Canyon. The next thing to be built is Skye Canyon Marketplace. With the arrival of the marketplace\, some of the residents are talking about opening shops in there. We can’t wait to see it come to life. \nSC: What do you do outside of Skye Canyon? \nMonica: Both of our families still live in the Midwest. When family comes to visit\, we enjoy taking them to Red Rock\, dining at the Mt. Charleston Lodge or to Lee Canyon to see the wild horses. My sister and her boyfriend participate in the rodeo back home\, and when they came to visit this past December\, it was awesome to show them a fun vacation attending the PBR rodeo. \nIn the spring and fall\, Jessica Henkins\, another Skye Canyon resident and I enjoy hiking at Red Rock. In the summer\, it’s all about hiking at Mt Charleston and escaping the heat. \nSC: Aside from Skye Canyon\, what else do you enjoy about Las Vegas? \nMonica: One of our favorite pastimes since moving to Las Vegas is trying unique restaurants. Spring Mountain road\, alone\, has amazing Asian food. Our neighbors Jessica and Josh have taken Lynn and me to Dim Sum at the Rio. We also enjoyed eating at Hobak Korean BBQ\, Swish Hot Pot\, Cubby Cattle Company and a few Pho restaurants. We’ve dined at so many places that I can’t remember them all. We have never been pegged as adventurous eaters\, but thankfully we enjoy living an active lifestyle since we are making it a point to experience the diversity in dining that Las Vegas is known for! \nSC: What would be something people would be surprised to learn about you? \nMonica: If I won the lottery\, I would still live in Skye Canyon. I might buy a second house in Maui\, but Skye Canyon would still be my home.

SUMMARY:Chalk + Cheers: A day of inspiring art\, delicious food and refreshing libations.
DESCRIPTION:Things worth celebrating: the creativity of our community\, Nevada’s outdoor landscapes\, food\, and libations. That’s why we created Chalk + Cheers\, a chalk art competition and art fair that is taking place Saturday\, Sept. 30 at Skye Canyon Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nChalk + Cheers includes an art fair with a variety of local artwork –paintings\, pencil and charcoal sketches\, collage\, sculpture\, and photography\, juried chalk art competition with the theme “base camp for the great outdoors\,” a freestyle chalk art area\, children’s art activities\, and live art by former Red Rock Canyon artist in residence Norah S. Siller. There is also a chance to support a local charity\, New Vista with Cheers for Charity\, and numerous dining options from local food trucks. \nThe juried chalk art competition will feature artists in three categories that will compete for $1\,850 in cash prizes. Attendees have a chance to get in on the fun by casting a vote for their favorite work of art in the People’s Choice Award. The lucky People’s Choice artist will take home a $500 cash prize. If you’ve got creative flair but aren’t up to compete\, there will be chalk art supplies and space in the freestyle chalk art area where guests of all ages can create their own chalk art designs. \nIf you are one to appreciate an artist’s process\, stop by and watch artist Norah S. Siller as she brings a blank 60”x60” canvas to life with a painting she will start and finish at the event. Siller says she finds inspiration in the landscape surrounding Las Vegas like Skye Canyon’s backdrop of the Spring Mountains which will be her muse. \nGuest can support New Vista\, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting intellectually disabled individuals in our community\, at Cheers for Charity. Guests aged 21 and over with proper identification can purchase tickets to enjoy six stations of unique cocktails\, beer\, and wine. Tickets are $3 for a single sample pour\, $5 for two samples\, and $10 for four samples. Cheers for Charity runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.\, and all proceeds benefit New Vista. \nThere will also be local favorite food trucks like Señor Blues\, 50 Shades of Green\, and Cookie Bar at the event serving up tasty dishes and non-alcoholic beverages. \nMark your calendar for September 30 because Chalk + Cheers is an event that you do not want to miss.

SUMMARY:Pick a Pumpkin at Skye Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Kids Can Pick a Pumpkin at Skye Canyon Park and Help Create a Change Now on Saturday\, October 14\nHalloween is right around the corner\, and we are jumping into the holiday spirit with plenty of treats for local kids. On Saturday\, Oct. 14\, children can take home a free pumpkin and treat-or-treat bag during Skye Canyon’s first Pick a Pumpkin event. \nThe fun starts at noon and runs until 6 p.m. Kids and parents can browse the pumpkin patch of about 1\,000 10 to 15-pound pumpkins set up outside of Skye Center. While the pumpkins are free\, a $1 donation for each pumpkin is suggested to support Create a Change Now\, a local non-profit committed to educating children and families about proper nutrition to combat preventable childhood diseases such as obesity. Skye Canyon will match donations up to $1000. \nFamilies can make it a day to remember by taking advantage of a Halloween themed photo booth area that will include bales of hay\, pumpkins\, and other festive fall decorations. Kids can break-in their new treat-or-treat bags when they visit Skye Canyon’s model homes where homebuilders will be giving out full-sized candy bars. \nHalloween costumes are welcome but not required. The event is free and open to the public. For more information\, visit our Pick a Pumpkin Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Skye & Stars Recap
DESCRIPTION:Since its debut in 2016\, Skye and Stars has become one of Skye Canyon’s most popular events and this year’s event continued to deliver. On Saturday\, May 19\, hundreds of people gathered at Skye Canyon Park to picnic\, enjoy music\, and take in sweeping views of the mountains before sunset. When the sun dropped behind the hills\, REI got the party started with glow-in-the-dark bowling and the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS) fired up its telescopes and the stargazing party switched into high gear. \nWhen it comes to moons and stars\, LVAS members are some of the most knowledgeable people in Las Vegas. Their volunteers helped curious stargazers of all ages to understand the evening’s celestial sights. For example\, Venus was visible as it set in the west. Stargazers learned that this was a special treat since clouds typically obscure its view. Stargazers not only viewed Venus but learned interesting facts like the planet is so hot that satellite probes melt within minutes of landing. \nLater in the evening\, Jupiter and its four Galilean moons were visible. The largest planet in the solar system\, LVAS’ team shared fun facts like a day on Jupiter is only nine Earth hours\, and scientists speculate that one of Jupiter’s moons may possibly sustain life. \nLast but not least\, “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” was playing throughout Skye Center for those who just couldn’t get enough of the celestial action. \nThe dark night sky at Skye Canyon Park makes it an ideal venue for stargazing. Please stay tuned for updates on future events by joining our social media community or subscribing to our newsletter updates.

SUMMARY:Chalktober Fest 2018
DESCRIPTION:“Fall” in love with all things artistic at Skye Canyon’s Chalktober Fest on Saturday\, Oct. 20\, at Skye Canyon Park. This year’s art festival celebrates the rising popularity of chalk art with a juried competition featuring 45 artists ranging from high school-age amateurs to professional artists\, giving their artistic take on what lights them up about life in Las Vegas. International chalk art competitor and local artist Jay Schwartz will create this year’s live large-scale art piece. \nA freestyle chalk art area with supplies has been designated for individuals of all ages and talents who feel inspired to create their own masterpiece. \nLooking for something to brighten up the home or office? The art fair will feature more than 30 artists showcasing and selling artwork in an array of mediums. \nOf course\, it wouldn’t be a fall festival without pumpkins. Skye Canyon will be giving away 1\,000 6- to 15-pound pumpkins to kids at the Pick-a-Pumpkin fundraiser to assist Create A Change Now\, a local nonprofit committed to eradicating preventable childhood diseases. A $2 donation is suggested per pumpkin. Next stop – the pumpkin decorating station. \nFood trucks\, along with craft beer and wine offerings will also be available\, and all proceeds from beer and wine sales will also benefit Create a Change Now. \nChalktober Fest gets better and better. Kids can also get their face painted\, play in the bounce houses or on the giant slide. To capture the fun\, an autumn-themed photo booth will be set up. Costumes are encouraged. Chalktober Fest is free and open from 2 to 6 p.m.

SUMMARY:Chalktober Fest
DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists! What lights you up about our city? Is it the swirling texture of sandstone or the bright lights of Las Vegas’ famous skyline? How do you define Spirit of Las Vegas? Skye Canyon’s second annual juried chalk art competition’s theme is Spirit of Las Vegas and artists are invited to participate in this unique event during Chalktober Fest\, a fall art festival on Saturday\, Oct. 20\, 2018\, at Skye Canyon Park. There is no fee to enter\, but the contest is limited to 45 artists. Registration is open now through September 20 at https://bit.ly/2M439LT. \nThe contest is open to both professional and amateur artists who will compete in three categories: high school student\, amateur or professional. Each category offers cash prizes\, $250 for first place\, $100 for second place\, and $50 for third place in each group. There is also a $500 award for one overall winner in the People’s Choice award. \nArtist check-in is 9 to 11 a.m. and work must be completed by 4 p.m. Artists will be assigned a station to work and will receive a set of water-based pastels. (Artists can also bring their own supplies.) A jury of local art aficionados will judge contestants work\, and winners will be announced at 5:15 p.m. \nBecause this is a fall festival\, Skye Canyon is offering artists the chance to show off and sell their wares.  Thirty 10 x 10 booths are available to artists of all mediums for no charge. This pop-up vendor village will include all mediums such as paint\, sketch\, pottery\, jewelry\, sculpture\, and photography\, and more. Artists do not have to compete in the chalk art competition to be considered for a vendor booth. The deadline for booth consideration is September 20\, and those interested can apply at https://bit.ly/2NZYVG1. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a colorful collection of work that illustrates the many interpretations of Spirit of Las Vegas.
