LAS VEGAS (Aug. 29, 2017)Skye Canyon, a 1,700-acre master-planned community in northwest Las Vegas, invites the public to attend its inaugural Chalk + Cheers, a juried chalk art competition and vendor fair on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017. There will be live art with former Red Rock Canyon artist in residence Norah S. Siller, a freestyle chalk art area open to guests of all ages, favorite food trucks, wine, beer, and entertainment. A free event that is open to the public, Chalk + Cheers is held at Skye Canyon Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The juried chalk art competition theme is “Base Camp for the Great Outdoors.” Artists will create work in one of four categories, Nevada landscapes, outdoor lifestyle, outdoor sports, and abstract outdoor. A set of water-based pastels will be provided, or artists can bring supplies. Artists will compete for cash prizes in three categories: high school student, university student/amateur artist, and professional. There is no entry fee through the contest is limited to 45 artists. Cash prizes distributed in each age category are $250 for first place, $100 for second place, and third place receives $50. A $500 People’s Choice Award will be given to one overall winner selected by event attendees. Artists have from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to complete their work. The jury will review completed artwork between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., and winners will be announced at 5 p.m. Artists can register online at http://bit.ly/2faBRbf.

Norah S. Siller will be working on a 60 x 60 canvas at Skye Canyon Park during the event. She finds inspiration in the landscape surrounding Las Vegas. “Every piece is an extension of myself, they are my emotions illustrated,” says Siller, a long time Las Vegas resident and rock climber who is originally from Sonora, Mexico. She comes from a long line of artists who taught her to develop her style and to appreciate working in a variety of mediums.

“I believe that the only mistake we can make in art is not creating it. The word competition is intimidating, but this is more about the experience of stepping out one’s comfort zone and the act of self-expression than a competition,” says Siller. “Chalk + Cheers will be a fun experience of coming together as a community, grabbing some chalk, and making a beautiful mess.”
The art vendor fair includes local artists across a variety of mediums like paint, pencil/charcoals, collage, sculpture, and photography, among others, whose work will be available for sale. For artists interested in a complimentary 10 x 10 vendor booth, the deadline for consideration is September 15. Artists can apply online at http://bit.ly/2u1sI7r.
