Since its debut in 2016, Skye and Stars has become one of Skye Canyon’s most popular events and this year’s event continued to deliver. On Saturday, May 19, hundreds of people gathered at Skye Canyon Park to picnic, enjoy music, and take in sweeping views of the mountains before sunset. When the sun dropped behind the hills, REI got the party started with glow-in-the-dark bowling and the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS) fired up its telescopes and the stargazing party switched into high gear.

When it comes to moons and stars, LVAS members are some of the most knowledgeable people in Las Vegas. Their volunteers helped curious stargazers of all ages to understand the evening’s celestial sights. For example, Venus was visible as it set in the west. Stargazers learned that this was a special treat since clouds typically obscure its view. Stargazers not only viewed Venus but learned interesting facts like the planet is so hot that satellite probes melt within minutes of landing.

Later in the evening, Jupiter and its four Galilean moons were visible. The largest planet in the solar system, LVAS’ team shared fun facts like a day on Jupiter is only nine Earth hours, and scientists speculate that one of Jupiter’s moons may possibly sustain life.

Last but not least, “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” was playing throughout Skye Center for those who just couldn’t get enough of the celestial action.

The dark night sky at Skye Canyon Park makes it an ideal venue for stargazing. Please stay tuned for updates on future events by joining our social media community or subscribing to our newsletter updates.
