Despite the unpredictable winds, creativity and community pride were on full display for this year’s Chalktober Fest at Skye Canyon Park. The sixth annual juried art competition welcomed the season with a celebration of art, autumn, and colorful expression.
Although last-minute changes needed to be made to compensate for the winds, the fun-filled family day included the chalk art contest, an art and vendor fair inside Skye Center, bingo, face painting, field games like hippity hop horse racing, outdoor games of giant connect four, Jenga and cornhole, inflatables, a train ride through the park, and even a pumpkin patch. A snack tent, and food trucks Alpha Dawg and Taco Ave as well as Aspire and Local 808 were on hand to provide food and drinks to the crowd.
This year, nearly 20 chalk artists of all skill levels braved the weather to participate in the competition and creatively interpret the theme of “Spread Love – Land, Sea, and Skye.” Vying for top honors and cash prizes, the juried chalk art competition included three categories, student (ages 12-18), amateur (18+), and professional. Cash prizes of $300 for first place, $200 for second place, and $100 for third place were awarded in each category. Additionally, $100 cash prizes were presented to one winner of Best 3D piece, and of Best Use of Color. As in previous years, attendees voted on the People’s Choice earning the winner an additional $100 cash award.

As part of Skye Canyon’s ongoing community support program Skye Serves, Chalktober Fest proceeds benefit local non-profit Project 150 whose mission is to provide support and services to homeless, displaced, and disadvantaged high school students so they can remain in school, graduate, and build bright futures. Between Skye Canyon residents and the Skye Canyon Cooperative, more than $9,000 was raised this year to support this impactful organization.
