More than 8,000 local children in need will start the school year with new school supplies and sneakers that were collected during Skye Canyon’s back-to-school drive. When a child doesn’t have the necessities for school it creates stress and kids are less focused in the classroom leading to a drop in performance. When furnished with the proper school supplies, children engage in classroom and self-esteem rises leading to better performance and outcomes.

Skye Serves is Skye Canyon’s philanthropic program that has raised over $50,000 in less than two years for local nonprofits. From July 16-23, Skye Canyon’s residents and the surrounding community collected over 1,000 school supply items that were donated to

Assistance League Las Vegas’ Operation School Bell program, an all-volunteer organization that has served the Las Vegas community for more than 40 years. Operation School Bell works closely with teachers and school counselors to select recipients with the greatest need who are able to select their school supplies from the donated items.

Donations were valued at $2,000 and Skye Canyon matched the dollar value presenting the non-profit with a $2,000 check. Donors who dropped items off at Skye Center were treated to a specialty Starbucks coffee on the house from Skye Bistro.

“Providing kids with the supplies they need has been proven to make a difference in academic achievement,” said Desiree Van Leer, Skye Canyon marketing manager and Skye Serves organizer. “When kids excel in school, everyone wins. Operation School Bell’s program benefits the entire community, and supporting their effort is exactly what community is all about.”

Thank you to those who donated and to our friends at Smith’s Marketplace for assisting in the collection efforts by hosting Assistance League drop-off bins.
