Back-to-School time can be stressful for students with limited financial means. Research shows that kids without adequate school supplies are more likely to skip school. However, when children have proper school supplies, they are inspired to excel. Each year, more than 8,000 students seek assistance for things like clothing and school supplies from Assistance League Las Vegas’ Operation School Bell, a program offering aid for at-risk K-12 students. It’s estimated that more than 12,000 students in the greater Las Vegas area are in need of this type of assistance. Skye Canyon is hosting a back-to-school supply drive benefitting Operation School Bell July 15 – 22, 2019. Donations can be dropped off at Skye Center (10111 W. Skye Canyon Park Dr.) from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Donors receive a voucher for a specialty Starbucks coffee from Skye Bistro. As part of its Skye Serves program, Skye Canyon will match all donations.

Assistance League Las Vegas is an all-volunteer organization that has served the Las Vegas community for over 40 years. The nonprofit’s 400 members volunteer more than 48,000 hours per year to support local families with an emphasis on helping children in need. Operation School Bell, its signature program allows K-12 students to “shop” for brand new clothing and other items needed for school.

“Las Vegas is faced with a homeless youth issue along with many families who are in need. We want to bring the community together to foster support for our students so kids can focus on their education and their bright future,” said Desiree Van Leer, marketing manager of Olympia Companies, developer of Skye Canyon. “Operation School Bell is an important program, which is why we are matching donations made by the community.”

Skye Serves is Skye Canyon’s philanthropic program for residents and non-residents to join efforts to support local nonprofit organizations. At each event, Skye Canyon matches donations raised for local charities. Since its inception in 2016, Skye Serves has raised over $60,000 benefitting 10 nonprofit organizations in Las Vegas.
